USA Adventure Part 1: Denver to Moab

USA Adventure Part 1: Denver to Moab

We just got back from a fantastic three-week adventure in the USA 🙂 I’ve made a map of our trip below (please enlarge for better viewing). We drove from Denver to San Francisco, visiting lots of National Parks and other interesting places. We slept in hotels, apartments, cabins, our tent, a yurt and even in a lookout tower. We drove more than 4600 km (almost 2900 miles), on highways as well as dirt roads. We had lots of sunshine and warm (/hot!) weather, and only one thunderstorm. We saw mountains, deserts, canyons in all shapes and sizes (from the Grand Canyon to canyons barely wide enough to walk in), big cities and giant trees. Three weeks full of amazing experiences and landscapes 🙂 It’s going to take me a while to go through all the photos – this trip will probably be covered in 15 blogs (all indicated with a blue dot on the map below).

Overview of our trip from Denver to San Francisco - there will be separate blog posts for every blue dot on the map :)

But to start from the beginning: we flew with Iceland Air, Tromsø->Oslo->Reykjavik->Denver. Quite fast and convenient. We spent one night in Denver, then drove through the Rocky Mountains to Moab, Utah – our first stop. The road through the Rocky Mountains climbs to 3000 meter, where autumn was in full swing and the aspen trees were a spectacular yellow colour. So beautiful!

We stopped for dinner in Glenwood Springs, where we also watched this train.

Around sunset, the Rocky Mountains slowly gave way to a desert landscape and we arrived in Utah 🙂

Close up of the train At sunset, the Rocky Mountains slowly gave way to the desert... welcome to Utah!

We rented a cabin not far from Moab, where we arrived late at night when darkness prevented us from seeing our surroundings. The stars were amazing, but we were both too tired to do any stargazing. We went to sleep, excited about the views we’d find the next morning.

Next stop: Arches National Park! 🙂

Ullstinden in the Clouds

Ullstinden in the Clouds

The morning after the aurora show, I woke up to a very sunny day. I had planned to climb Ullstinden, another Ti pÃ¥ Topp mountain (1078m). I left the house as quick as I could, as I knew it would get more cloudy throughout the day. I started the hike in beautiful sunshine, though there were already some low clouds all around. I was  looking forward to the view towards the Lyngen Alps, as you can see here in Paul’s photos. But my luck ran out this time, somewhere halfway to the top, I was in the clouds! Nothing to be seen… When I reached the top (after 3 hours), it even started raining a bit. Oh well 😀

I started my hike in sunshine with good views, but that didn't last very long The top of Ullstinden... I was looking forward to spectacular views, but no such luck!

On my way back, I couldn’t see much either, but every now and then a small hole in the clouds revealed the view towards Tromsø. I was surprised to find a patch of flowers high up on the mountain, so late in the summer…

Every now and then there was a small hole in the clouds I was surprised to find this patch of flowers!

There was this beautiful stream surrounded by vibrant green moss… I didn’t have a tripod with me but there were plenty of rocks to use as a stable base to get some long exposures of the waterfall.

Autumn comes early in September here, and on Ullstinden the autumn colours were beautiful 🙂

Autumn colours: some bright red pathes And some very yellow parts!

At some point you go through a pretty birch forest, with lots of firns and mushrooms.

The final km is an annoying stretch of swamp. The total time used for this hike was about 5.5 hours. Here is the map and profile…

This was my 17th Ti pÃ¥ Topp (out of 20) 🙂 It’s been a good summer!

Aurora 04-05 September

Aurora 04-05 September

The aurora activity was high last week, but most nights it was too cloudy to see anything. On Tuesday evening it was raining quite heavily, so I had given up hope. It was near midnight and I considered going to bed, when I received a text message from Eelke: northern lights! I ran outside, and found that it had cleared up completely. There was indeed some aurora, but it was very weak. But then, just before I went back inside, the sky exploded with green aurora. No question about it, I grabbed my camera and headed to Telegrafbukta 🙂 Eelke and Roy joined me shortly afterwards, and we had an amazing couple of hours on the jetty. It was one of those nights where you’re spinning around, never sure in which direction to aim your camera, as there was activity EVERYWHERE. It was beautiful, and the nice thing about these shows so early in the season is that you don’t freeze, I didn’t even need gloves 🙂

Here’s a selection of the photos I took that night…

It doesn't get completely dark yet, which makes it even more beautiful An intense green curl developing

Getting bigger and bigger Until I had to turn my camera around to fit it all in

Looking south towards Håkøya, Bentjordstinden and Bakaromntinden Purple beams! Not even the moon could outshine the aurora

Another spiral developing There was lots of movement

The purple/blue beams are hard to see with the naked eye When the aurora moves fast, you often see a pink fringe below the green

Impressive aurora show! I need an even wider lens, it didn't fit in :D

Aurora explosion! It was crazy, what a night...

Wow! Two beams reflected in the fjord

WHAT A NIGHT!! 🙂 I finally rolled into bed at 2:30 in the morning, which meant I had to change my plans of getting up early to climb a mountain, but it was more than worth it 🙂
