Rundfjellet – Stålhovet

Rundfjellet – Stålhovet

On Tuesday we woke up to thick fog, but never mind: I was going to climb Stålhovet (861m) with Eelke and Maaike, and I knew the sun would be shining above the fog 🙂 It was quite exciting to reach the top of the fog, conveniently located near the tree line, so that we had spectacular views over a sea of fog… It was so beautiful that we couldn’t stop taking photos, so our progress to the first top –…

Tverrfjellet on a Rainy Day

Tverrfjellet on a Rainy Day

This weekend it rained, and rained, and rained… Luckily not as much as it did in the border region (further inland), where they got more rain in one day than they normally get in all of July – 60 mm! Lots of rivers flooded, you can see a photo series here. In Tromsø we “only” got 23 mm, but that was more than enough 😉 On Sunday we were really fed up of the bad weather, and when it looked…

Northern Norway at its Best

Northern Norway at its Best

Last night we drove to Sommarøy where we climbed Ørnfløya, a ti-på-topp peak which is only 160 m high but possibly has the best view of them all 🙂 It was our third visit to Ørnfløya, but this view never gets boring! Afterwards we decided to have a cup of tea on the beach that we spotted in the panorama above. A really nice place, and it was sheltered from the wind too. Unfortunately the mosquitos are quite active lately,…

Fellestur til Nordtinden

Fellestur til Nordtinden

Last week I joined a “fellestur” (joint trip) to Nordtinden (640 m), one of the Ti på Topp mountains. Four years ago we climbed Nordtinden on a beautiful summer day in August, but then we started from Kvaløyvågen, and this time we started from Skulsfjord. I had never joint a fellestur before, as I know the Norwegians are mountain goats and hard to keep up with, but I decided I could handle the challenge now 😉 It was grey weather…

Krokvatnet and Tomasjordnes

Krokvatnet and Tomasjordnes

Right now the snow (sigh) is falling outside the window, and I long back to the long stretch of sunny days we had for a while. Oh well, at least I have time to catch up with my blog 😉 Here are some photos from an evening trip to Krokvatnet, which is one of the Ti på Topp winter turs this year. We went on ski’s and we were racing against the growing shadows all the way up… eventually we…

Ti på Topp 2012: Kjølen

Ti på Topp 2012: Kjølen

This year, Ti på Topp has started earlier than usual and includes 5 winter tops. I had a day off last Tuesday, and the weather was still really nice, so I decided to challenge myself and go up Kjølen (790 m). It’s one of the most prominent mountains near Tromsø (it also has the flight radar on top), but I had never been there. I’d read that there was very little snow in places and decided to go up on…

Ti på Topp 2010: Grønnlibruna & Ørnfløya

Ti på Topp 2010: Grønnlibruna & Ørnfløya

I went up Grønnlibruna one morning in July before a late shift at work. Grønnlibruna is 401 m high. I took the shorter route up from Håkøybotn. I have been to Grønnlibruna twice before (once on snowshoes and one failed attempt in autumn) but always from Straumsbukta. I much prefer the route from Håkøybotn, it’s a lot shorter and very direct (the other route goes up to a slightly lower top, then down to a valley and up to the…
