Cycling in Shakespeare country

Cycling in Shakespeare country

Hello!

Last weekend I went on a trip to Stratford-upon-Avon with Veronika. We decided kind of last minute to take our bikes with us. They advise you to make reservations, but we couldn’t so we just took the chance.

Stratford

The train from Norwich to London has lots of room for bikes!

On the website of the London underground I found a journey planner that also let you choose a cycle route. So we decided to cycle from London Liverpool Street station to London Marylebone station, about 8 kilometers. We had very detailed maps (so detailed that we had often already passed the street we needed, cause we didn’t realize the scale). It was rush hour, so busy everywhere, and cycling between the double deck busses is quite a challenge! It was supposed to take 25 minutes but it took us almost 45 minutes. We still made our next train, that took us to Stratford. It was about 4 km from the station to the youth hostel, so we were happy that we had our bikes with us!

The next day we woke up early, at 7:30 (!!) and we started our cycle tour at about 8:30. We cycled from Stratford to Warwick, about 10 miles, it took us less than an hour. Very nice route, and the weather was wonderful!

A house we passed close to the youth hostel

Warwick is a very pretty town! We were lucky that they were having a French market that day, so we bought some great food for lunch there.

Stratford

And raspberries!!

We visited the cathedral, that was quite impressive, especially all the graves of Earls of Warwick, here are some examples:

Stratford Stratford

One has a swan on his helmet, and apparently has his hands open so that he can look at Maria… the others have wide open eyes, strange!

Warwick is famous for its castle. It is owned by the Tussaud Family, and it costs 16 pounds to visit!! We didn’t think it would be worth the money, so we just looked at the castle from outside.

Stratford Stratford Stratford

It had started to rain in the mean time, but we still decided to continue to Kenilworth, to visit another castle. This was about 4 miles from Warwick, but we didn’t have a good cycle map so we just cycled along busy roads.

The castle/ruin in Kenilworth

We then cycled back to Leamington Spa, which is right next to Warwick. To my surprise I found out it was linked to Heemstede, very close to where I am from in the Netherlands! Very surprisingly as well is the fact that Leamington Spa was a spa town πŸ˜‰ and we visited the free museum in the Pump House. Well most of the time we were relaxing in those chairs and eating chocolate πŸ™‚

Stratford Stratford

We went to the train station to see if we could catch a train back to Stratford, but we had just missed it and the next one was in 2 hours. So we decided to cycle back, it was only 5 PM so we had enough time.

We found these huge fields of rapeseed, very pretty! We couldn’t resist going into one of those fields to take some photos πŸ™‚

Stratford Stratford Stratford

We stopped for dinner at a pub in Wellesbourne. Good choice, we had a really good meal there and it wasn’t expensive. They played good music, so we stayed there for quite a while, enjoying the nice atmosphere.

The next day we cycled to Stratford-upon-Avon. It is a very touristy town since Shakespeare is from here. But it’s really pretty and it wasn’t that busy except with people coming for the (half) marathon that was taking place.

Stratford Stratford Stratford

The start of the marathon, some pretty houses and canal boats in the Avon river.

Shakespeare is everywhere in this town, you can visit the house where he was born, where his mum was born, where he died, where his wife grew up, etc… We also found this nice statues in the park.

Stratford Stratford

Veronika finally found her Prince, and I had a good conversation with Hamlet πŸ˜‰

We walked through the park against the half marathon people who were already finishing (in 1h20min, impressive!) This is the Shakespeare Theatre:

Stratford

We then cycled to Shottery, very closeby, to visit Anne Hathaway’s Cottage (Shakespeare’s wife). We saw many beautiful cottages in this area! Veronika wasn’t very interested though…

We didn’t visit the cottage but looked around for a bit, laughing at the tourists. They are useful though, we asked one of them to take a photo of us.

Stratford Stratford Stratford

Veronika was complaining that I didn’t give her enough breaks, she was exhausted πŸ˜‰

We left Stratford at 2 PM, this time it took us more than 8 hours to get back home!! London Marylebone was closed for the weekend so we had to change trains in Banbury. Somehow we got into the wrong on
e, and didn’t realize until we reached the final destination: Reading!! So from there we took a train to London Waterloo, it stopped at every 3 houses so it took quite long. From Waterloo we took the bridge to get to the Embankment tube station, so that we could get on the Circle Line to London Liverpool Street. Outside of peak hours you are allowed to take your bike on the tube (for free!)

When we arrived in London Liverpool Street, they cancelled 3 trains going to Norwich, so we had to wait for 1,5 hour. We bought some food and went to a nearby park to eat it. Finally at around 10 PM we arrived home. It was a great weekend, lots of fun! I really enjoyed taking our bikes on the trip and will certainly do that again.

This week the weather in Norwich has been great, which makes it difficult to stay in the office. The lake and surrounding fields are sooo tempting!! There is a lot going on this week, courses, a symposium, and also the symposium dinner tomorrow night. Then there is also the Norwich Festival going on, so lots of things to do. More about all that later!

I also still plan to post the photos of the weekend that my parents were in Norwich! If I can find the time πŸ˜‰

Holkham Beach

Hello!

We went to the beach last Wednesday after work. Great news: I got into a car share!! Colin got a car and asked me if I wanted to split the insurance costs and share the car. Of course :)) So that’s very exciting!! For now, I am not on the insurance yet so I am not allowed to drive it, but that should be fixed in a couple of weeks. Anyway, we took the car and went to the beach…

It was a great trip, when we walked back to the car it was dark already. It will be so much fun to have a car and be able to go on trips every now and then.

My parents are coming to Norwich tomorrow, till Monday probably. Should be fun! Then next week is filled with courses, I start the Teaching Skills course and I also have the second part of the Further Unix course. Fun fun fun πŸ˜‰ And then in the weekend I am going to Stratford-upon-Avon with Veronika, to be a REAL tourist there hehe.

Have a good weekend!

Easter in the Netherlands & bike tour around Norwich

Easter in the Netherlands & bike tour around Norwich

Hello πŸ™‚

Hope you all had a nice Easter break! Mine was very nice πŸ™‚ It was great to spend a couple of days at home.

I left on Thursday, everything went fine, though the ferry was really really crowded, worse than at Christmas! Mostly football teams, rugby teams, scouting groups on their way to Easter tournaments I guess. I mostly had a very quiet weekend, I didn’t feel like running around meeting people because I had been busy enough here in Norwich. So for once it was nice to just sit down and do NOTHING hehe πŸ™‚

On Friday night I went for dinner at my sisters new apartment in Haarlem. It looks really nice!! Red and pink is not my favorite combination πŸ˜‰ but I still really like her place.

On Saturday I went to the beach in Scheveningen with CΓ©lia and Gert-Jan. The weather was a bit boring, grey and quite cold. But it was very nice to see them and we went for a long walk on the beach and in the dunes.

On Sunday we had a Easter brunch at our house with the whole family. 11 people at the table, very busy! Bart and Kaya even decided to hide eggs in the garden, you should have seen Paul, Esther, Laura and Robbert run outside to start searching, you would think they were like 7 years old πŸ˜‰ hehe.

On Monday I didn’t do much, mostly worked on my website… I have dreamweaver on my computer now and I’m working on a MAJOR update, I hope to finish it soon!

Tuesday morning I went shopping with my mum, to buy lots of thing to bring to Norwich πŸ™‚ And then it was time to go back already. I had a good trip back, all went fine, this time the ferry was less crowded so a bit more comfortable.

Veronika came by at night, she left for Scotland the next day and I lent her my digital camera. That means I am finally forced to use my SLR again, boyyy that was a long time ago.

I went back to work on Wednesday, it’s so quiet… The office is often empty. But that did help me to work a bit harder ;). And before I knew it, it was weekend again!

I spent Saturday buying food, doing laundry and cleaning the house, so exciting πŸ˜‰ The weather was so nice though!! Very sunny and quite warm, I wore my sandals for the first time. My housemates had a BBQ, and I had Tanja, Patama and Nem over for dinner which was really nice.

On Sunday I went for a bike ride with Patama, unfortunately the weather changed to the usual overcast/grey/boring weather but at least it wasn’t raining! We biked to Venta Icenorum at Caistor St Edmund, not very far south of Norwich. This used to be a big roman town surrounded by city walls. All that remains now are the city walls, but you can walk around and they have some information about how it used to look. Plus there were lots of sheep with lambs so that was nice πŸ™‚

We stopped at a tavern for some tea/hot chocolate and very nice cheese cake. We were following a cycle route that Patama got at the tourist information, but we didn’t like how it often used busy roads so in the end we made our own route taking little country roads. They are very nice! Really narrow, and we saw lots of flowers and birds and cute little houses. We even saw fields and fields of daffodils, felt like home πŸ˜‰ Too bad they were already wilting.

The last part of the trip was very scenic, on a road with warning signs for deep tanks and rottweilers and passing the Norwich water treatment facility, what a horrible smell!!

Now I am just relaxing, next week will be a busy one. Then on Saturday my parents are coming to visit! Should be nice, I hope the weather will be good so we can go to the coast on Monday (the 1st of May is a bank holiday here).

Other news… I decided to go to Switzerland for 2 weeks at the end of June. I am really looking forward to that! And this time I am not going to look up all train time tables in advance and book all the youth hostels πŸ˜‰ I found out last year that it’s not really necessary and it will be fun to have some freedom. I will also visit CΓ©lia for a weekend!

That’s all for now!
