Surprise visit to the Netherlands & Hunstanton Beach

Surprise visit to the Netherlands & Hunstanton Beach

Hello!

Sorry for the lack of updates – I’ve been drowning in work! I had to work very hard but the good news is that I finally have results and that’s such a relief. I can finally start my PhD πŸ˜‰

Two weeks ago I went for a surprise visit to the Netherlands! My brother is still doing very well with Motifive, the student company selling foldable lunch boxes that won the second price in Europe… They had to close the company down (as it was a school project), but he started it up again with one of the other members.

A while ago he was about to get a very good deal with a supermarket, and he told me: if I get it, I’ll get you a ticket to come celebrate. I didn’t take it very seriously, as he later said he would send me a rowing boat πŸ˜‰ While driving back from Wales, I found out that he meant it… and I got a ticket to come to the Netherlands from Friday night till Sunday night. Nobody (except my brother of course) knew that I was coming!

Flying from Norwich to Amsterdam on the last Friday flight is quite interesting as most passengers are Dutch people working for Shell or other oil companies, going home for the weekend. It’s quite easy to recognise them, there’s lots of them and they all seem to know each other. I was seated between many of them, pretended to be English (I was reading an English book, that helps), and was eavesdropping on their conversations. Quite funny, especially since one of them was 35+, had sold his house in the Netherlands and permanently lived in Norwich, but was still flying back every weekend…… to visit HIS PARENTS!! Imagine…

Anyway… as most of you know, I really enjoy flying and love to take pictures. This time I was quite lucky, even though it was hazy. There were lots of interesting things to see! Over sea I saw these cloud streets crossing each other – I had never seen that before! I also saw an interesting wave phenomenon in the middle of the sea and perpendicular to the coast further on, Paul later explained that they are caused by Langmuir circulation in the ocean. Apparently it’s very rare to see this!

We flew over Noordwijk again, in the first photo you can see the flower fields in the distance!

Then we flew over the flower fields, there were not that many in bloom anymore however – a pity!

Flower fields Flower fields

Now that second photo (above) is something really cool – I recognised a building I photographed 4 years ago… See these two photos below:

Flower fields Flower fields

Isn’t that cool!!

My brother picked me up from Schiphol, and he told me to enter the house ‘like I just came back from buying some bread’. My parents were watching tv and were SO surprised when I suddenly walked into the room. They nearly fell from their chairs πŸ˜‰

My dad never quite got over the surprise, he kept telling me I ruined his whole plan for the weekend hehe… of course he didn’t mean that. I had a great time at home! On Sunday it was my brothers 22nd birthday, and everyone was there.

The weekend flew by and on Sunday night I flew back to Norwich. The flight was pretty, it was at sunset and we flew over IJmuiden, I could recognize a lot! Unfortunately it was too dark to take photos, none of them turned out.

Here is a last photo of the Netherlands, these are some glass kind of eggs that my mum has in a bowl on the table – I really like them and had to take this photo πŸ™‚

Back in Norwich, we decided to go to Hunstanton the following weekend. This was one place on the Norfolk coast we had both never been and it’s supposed to be pretty. The weather looked very nice, and I stubbornly decided that it was summer and wore sandals, shorts and a shirt.

Unfortunately the skies turned grey and it was quite cold, I was freezing whenever I stood still for too long. The cliffs of Hunstanton are spectacular indeed! I’d like to go back there one day with blue skies to get better photos πŸ™‚

As you can see, the cliffs are very colourful, and have 3 distinctive layers: white chalk, (rare!) red chalk (with many fossils) and euhm something brown underneath, I don’t remember. Very pretty!

That was all, this weekend I haven’t done much even though the weather was nice… but we both had work to do :(. And… we’re flying to the Netherlands on Tuesday evening! Yes again, hehe… but this trip was planned months ago! We’re going for 6 days, and we’re going to bike from Gouda to Wageningen, camping along the way. It’s not very far, 150 km at most, but we’ll take about three days. We’re visiting Celia and Gert-Jan in Wageningen, and will celebrate

“Bevrijdingsdag” (Liberation Day) with them in Wageningen. For those who are not Dutch: in the Netherlands we have remembrance/memorial day on the evening of the 4th of May (for the victims of the second world war), and then the next day is to celebrate our freedom. Wageningen played a big role in the Second World War – one
of the biggest fights took place very nearby, the fight that caused the capitulation of the Netherlands, and at the end of the war the capitulation of Germany was signed in Hotel De Wereld in Wageningen. Because of this, the biggest Freedom Day celebrations take place in Wageningen, it’s a big music festival and there is also a veteran’s parade. It’s a great day, and many old-Wageningers come back to Wageningen on that day, it will be fun to see some of my old friends again!

So stay tuned for photos of our trip to the Netherlands πŸ™‚

Sinterklaas in the Netherlands

Sinterklaas in the Netherlands

Hello!

I went to the Netherlands with Paul for 5 days (9-13 Nov) for Sinterklaas. Sinterklaas is supposed to be on the 5th of December, but because we didn’t have time to come in December, my parents decided to celebrate it on the 12th of November instead πŸ™‚

For Sinterklaas, we make ‘surprises’ (something you make to wrap your present in, usually something funny) and write poems for each other. We drew names over the internet in advance. I got my sister and Paul had Esther, my youngest brother’s girlfriend. Slight problem that he had never met her, but well πŸ˜‰

Anyway, more on that later!

We biked to the airport on Thursday morning, it took only 20 minutes! We flew with Flybe from Norwich to Amsterdam, it was a really nice flight with good views most of the time:

We had dinner with my parents and my sister, and at night we went to the late night shopping in Haarlem, to buy some final presents πŸ™‚ (a ‘rose’ (pink) towel from the Hema is not really available in Norwich πŸ˜‰ )

On Friday we went for a bike ride to the beach, through the dunes. The weather wasn’t great but at least it wasn’t raining – very windy though! We walked on the beach for a while, then enjoyed a hot chocolate and some cake at the restaurant there. On the way back, we found some Scottish Highlanders on the path. They are impressive, but a bit scary too – such big horns!

On Friday night we had a big family dinner, my mum had made pizza and we were 13 people around the table! On Saturday my parents took us for a ride to IJmuiden, we had to buy some things and they gave us a tour of the harbour and the sluices. We looked at a big ship coming through, but it was so windy and cold that we went back to the warm car fairly soon πŸ™‚

In the afternoon we started making our ‘surprises’. I build a cardboard pyramid for my sister, who went to Egypt last Summer. Paul had a bit more ambitious project, he wanted to make a huge ball out of straws. My project was done really quickly, so I helped him. And we worked, and worked, and worked… Until we decided to go for dinner at a really nice Mexican restaurant in Haarlem, with an unpronounceable name – Popocatepetl. We came back, and worked and worked and worked.. till it was finally finished at 2 AM!!! And our fingers were damaged from all the wires. Here are some photos, the result made it worth all the effort!

On Sunday we slept till late – tired of all the work! We had rented inline skates on Saturday, and we wanted to try them. No matter the weather – we left in the pouring rain! Paul had never tried it before, or even ice skating, so he had to learn from the beginning. He learnt very quickly though and we went for a little tour. It was fun!

We came back just in time to write our poems. Everybody arrived, and we had a buffet dinner before starting the Sinterklaas evening. Here’s a photo report of the evening!

The evening was a big success and lots of fun! We got so many presents that we spent quite some time that evening reorganizing our bags for the flight home.

We left on Monday in the early afternoon, and had a quick flight back to Norwich. It was really nice to be back home for a couple of days, and to show Paul everything. Well, everything, there were many things we wanted to do and see, but we did not have time. It’ll have to wait for the next trip!

I have a lot more photos to post here, I’ll try to put them online this week. Stay tuned πŸ™‚

Easter in the Netherlands & bike tour around Norwich

Easter in the Netherlands & bike tour around Norwich

Hello πŸ™‚

Hope you all had a nice Easter break! Mine was very nice πŸ™‚ It was great to spend a couple of days at home.

I left on Thursday, everything went fine, though the ferry was really really crowded, worse than at Christmas! Mostly football teams, rugby teams, scouting groups on their way to Easter tournaments I guess. I mostly had a very quiet weekend, I didn’t feel like running around meeting people because I had been busy enough here in Norwich. So for once it was nice to just sit down and do NOTHING hehe πŸ™‚

On Friday night I went for dinner at my sisters new apartment in Haarlem. It looks really nice!! Red and pink is not my favorite combination πŸ˜‰ but I still really like her place.

On Saturday I went to the beach in Scheveningen with CΓ©lia and Gert-Jan. The weather was a bit boring, grey and quite cold. But it was very nice to see them and we went for a long walk on the beach and in the dunes.

On Sunday we had a Easter brunch at our house with the whole family. 11 people at the table, very busy! Bart and Kaya even decided to hide eggs in the garden, you should have seen Paul, Esther, Laura and Robbert run outside to start searching, you would think they were like 7 years old πŸ˜‰ hehe.

On Monday I didn’t do much, mostly worked on my website… I have dreamweaver on my computer now and I’m working on a MAJOR update, I hope to finish it soon!

Tuesday morning I went shopping with my mum, to buy lots of thing to bring to Norwich πŸ™‚ And then it was time to go back already. I had a good trip back, all went fine, this time the ferry was less crowded so a bit more comfortable.

Veronika came by at night, she left for Scotland the next day and I lent her my digital camera. That means I am finally forced to use my SLR again, boyyy that was a long time ago.

I went back to work on Wednesday, it’s so quiet… The office is often empty. But that did help me to work a bit harder ;). And before I knew it, it was weekend again!

I spent Saturday buying food, doing laundry and cleaning the house, so exciting πŸ˜‰ The weather was so nice though!! Very sunny and quite warm, I wore my sandals for the first time. My housemates had a BBQ, and I had Tanja, Patama and Nem over for dinner which was really nice.

On Sunday I went for a bike ride with Patama, unfortunately the weather changed to the usual overcast/grey/boring weather but at least it wasn’t raining! We biked to Venta Icenorum at Caistor St Edmund, not very far south of Norwich. This used to be a big roman town surrounded by city walls. All that remains now are the city walls, but you can walk around and they have some information about how it used to look. Plus there were lots of sheep with lambs so that was nice πŸ™‚

Lots of sheep!

This one was very curious πŸ™‚

We found this nice church surrounded by daffodils in a very small village!

There was a ruin of an old church on the other side of the street

We stopped at a tavern for some tea/hot chocolate and very nice cheese cake. We were following a cycle route that Patama got at the tourist information, but we didn’t like how it often used busy roads so in the end we made our own route taking little country roads. They are very nice! Really narrow, and we saw lots of flowers and birds and cute little houses. We even saw fields and fields of daffodils, felt like home πŸ˜‰ Too bad they were already wilting.

The last part of the trip was very scenic, on a road with warning signs for deep tanks and rottweilers and passing the Norwich water treatment facility, what a horrible smell!!

Now I am just relaxing, next week will be a busy one. Then on Saturday my parents are coming to visit! Should be nice, I hope the weather will be good so we can go to the coast on Monday (the 1st of May is a bank holiday here).

Other news… I decided to go to Switzerland for 2 weeks at the end of June. I am really looking forward to that! And this time I am not going to look up all train time tables in advance and book all the youth hostels πŸ˜‰ I found out last year that it’s not really necessary and it will be fun to have some freedom. I will also visit CΓ©lia for a weekend!

That’s all for now!
