Starry Starry Night
The days are very very short now, and when you have to work during the day, night photography is the way to go 😉 Last Thursday I went out with my photography workshop group, hoping for northern lights and the Geminid meteor shower. The evening started very promising, with northern lights dancing above Vengsøya…
We saw a few shooting stars, and decided to move to a different place to get a better view. But then the clouds rolled in… At first you could still see the stars through the thin clouds, but soon there was nothing left. Only to the west, some aurora was visible underneath the clouds… Oh well!
Last night, it was very clear and the aurora was active. We went to Skulsfjord, where we found some very dark skies and LOTS of stars. Even the Milky Way was visible 🙂 I didn’t see any meteors, though Paul did see one. I did hear whales though, breathing out nearby. Magic!
We caught the end of the show, as it soon calmed down and all that was left was a green band that didn’t move very much.
It was windy and cold, so after a while we gave up and drove home to warm up 🙂

Beautiful pics. Thanks for sharing. We missed the meteors here too. We are having rainy weather and mostly cloudy days and nights. RATS!!! The same thing happened this last summer with the Perseids. Speaking of rain, a day before yesterday we broke records. We had more rain that day than we had in the whole year in 2011!!! It did rain all night throughout town. No, no floods, just a slow steady rain all night long. The desert will be gloriously in full bloom next spring. I can hear all the photo enthusiasts start packing their gear to go out and record another epic of the desert in bloom.
How are you planning to spend your birthDAY. Are you working that day?
Hi Martha, pity you didn’t get to see any meteors either! WOW, that must have been a lot of rain, crazy!
I am planning a party for my birthday – I thought this year since it will be 20.12.2012 and I am turning 20+12, I really should celebrate 🙂 looking forward!
Awesome pictures as usual! There’s nothing like pictures from northern Norway to remind you how beautiful the earth and sky can be.
Thanks Ben 🙂
Ah, how totally stunning. I understand why you never quite tire of the view! : )
Hi Hanneke,
just wanted to leave some birthday wishes (you are exactly 4 weeks older than me ;))! Have a nice day!
In the meanwhile, I have become a regular follower of your fantastic blog. 🙂
Even in the darkest time of year with no direct sunlight it is often so much lighter and more colourful than here where everything is just grey… Hopefully we will get some snow tomorrow at least for 1 or 2 days before everything melts away towards Christmas.
Have a nice Christmas!
Björn
Hi Björn,
Thank you so much!! My birthday was wonderful, as you can see in the photos I shared today… we have been so lucky with amazingly colourful skies! Indeed, it seems more colourful on those darkest days than any other time of the year.
We have very little snow here, everybody is impatiently waiting for a proper snow cover, but it doesn’t seem to come anytime soon.
Merry Christmas to you too, and all the best for 2013!
Hanneke
